US Lighting Research Center releases PV LED outdoor lighting test results

December 29, 2020

Introduction: An evaluation project demonstrated by the American Lighting Research Center demonstrated the good performance of photovoltaic-powered outdoor LED luminaires.

High-tech LED compilation October 10 news, this lighting research center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) released a detailed field photovoltaic power LED lighting test results, these lights installed in the North Carolina card Three public outdoor locations in the mountains of Tskill.

The project was initiated and funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency and the Sullivan Renaissance Institute, and the beautification and community renovation projects were funded primarily by the Gerry Foundation.

The mission of the project is to check system performance, photometric performance, energy savings, and whether people can accept photovoltaic-powered LED Outdoor Lighting systems.

The report, titled "Post-Top Photovoltaic Pathway Luminaire," evaluated 24 basic streetlights designed by Sullivan Renaissance, Philips Hadco and SolarOne® Solutions. The rear-mounted luminaire, called "Renaissance", has a decorative and Victorian look, as well as LED modules powered by PV panels. This luminaire is installed in three locations in Sullivan County, New York.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Agency (NYSERDA) funded this independent assessment and hopes to expand the use of photovoltaic-powered LED outdoor lighting. Francis Murray, chairman and CEO of NYSERDA, said that the demonstration project can save 2,700 kWh of electricity per year compared to traditional outdoor lighting systems.

"The combination of modern technology and traditional styles has created this grid-free LED luminaire, suitable for rural environments, and is accepted by the public, without the need for a public power system," said Jennifer Brons. He is a scientist at the Lighting Research Center and a manager at the DELTA project. “Residents and visitors from all three places have a deep impression of the PV LED system,” he added.

    Invention project

* "Renaissance" luminaires achieve energy savings by not using public electricity, thus avoiding pollution. In fact, compared to traditional lighting methods, the three installed LED Street Lights avoided 3,000 lbs of CO2 emissions.

* Renaissance luminaires are designed with light pollution in mind, emitting as little light as possible to the sky and non-illuminated areas.

* The luminaire's switching program takes into account minor differences in the four seasons and has proven to be effective.

* Illumination level refers to IESNA recommendations for related applications

*This Renaissance luminaire is loved by residents and tourists from all three places.

* Maintenance personnel think these lights are easy to install

“This field test is based on Philips' outdoor LED solutions, which can bring many benefits to the society. In this case, the energy has been saved more. This outdoor lighting has beautified the environment and brought to the community. A sense of security. This is a major discovery that I believe can be replicated in a global community, which is our cutting edge ideas and ideas that are better than our competitors,” said Eric Anderson, senior marketing manager at Philips Hadco.

“This technology opens the door to the popularization of carbon reduction technology, and the technology has reached and is close to perfection in less than two years. The three demonstration projects evaluated the solar lighting system and the efficiency increased by 40%. SolarOne is very happy to be able to Became a member of this demonstration engineering team, which led the development of this technology and put it into practice,” said Monone Azzam, CEO and President of SolarOne Solutions.

    DELTA project

The DELTA project was initiated by NYSERDA and is dedicated to "presenting and evaluating lighting technologies and applications." The project demonstrates a range of application scenarios to evaluate lighting technologies in real-world environments, including commercial, residential, retail, institutional, industrial, and outdoor applications. Some DELTA studies evaluate technologies that have been applied to the market. They conducted a lot of DELTA field tests, evaluated some basic lighting techniques, and released independent verification reports and recommendations for improvement.

The DELTA report features many energy calculations, resident surveys, maintenance staff feedback, field photometric measurements, and environmental impacts of energy savings. These special aspects of lighting encourage readers to use it in their own applications.

Through recent years of DELTA technology and application evaluation, the recent DELTA project evaluated the application of T5 fluorescent tubes and wireless mobile induction lighting control systems in a distribution center warehouse, integrating classroom lighting technology, refrigerator room LED lighting technology and bus shelters.
